The Origin of Peranakan FoodDated back in 15th century, there were a lot of Chinese workers, businessman, traders, soldiers traveled to southern Asia for many reasons, most of them were here for earning a better living. During that time, the population in southern Asia were majority Malays. Slowly there were many Chinese married Malay wives and their descendants are called Straights Chinese or best known as Peranakan. They have developed a unique style of their own in food, customs and special dressing that is the merge of Chinese and Malay culture. The reason is all of these 3 places are famous sea port since 15th century, it was the first landing place by most of the Chinese people and get rooted here. Penang Peranakan cooking has great influencing from Thai Malays as it is nearer to Thailand, where Malacca and Singapore Peranakan cooking has greater influenced by Indonesia Malay. There some basic yet authentic essential ingredients in Peranakan cooking, example like great consumption in lemon grass, coconut milk, galangal, palm sugar or Malacca sugar, limes, red and green fresh chillies, glutinous rice and screwpine leaves for better flavoring and smell.
