Indian Lentils or Dhall

Ingredients: (Serves 4-6)

1.5 cup Dhall

1 large Onion

3 cloves Garlic

2 cm piece Ginger

2 cups Water

3 large Tomatoes

1 tsp Turmeric Powder

Salt to taste

1 tsp Cummin

4 Dried Chillies

3 tbsp Ghee or Butter

Method:

1. Slice onion, chop garlic, shred ginger, quarter the tomatoes, cut the dried chillies to pieces.

2. Wash and drain the dhall. Heat up a deep pan, put in dhall, 2 cups of water, garlic, ginger, salt, turmeric, and simmer until dhall is soft and able to mash.

3. Heat up another small pan, put in Ghee or butter.

4. Add in dried chillies, cummin, and sliced onions. Fry until onions is golden brown in color.

5. Add in quartered tomatoes and fry for couple of minutes, then add in the cooked dhall, stir and mash around, let simmer for about 5-10 minutes.

6. Serve while hot with rice, vegetables, fried fish or chapatis.
